Flipgrid: Video-Based Discussion Platform

Explore how to use Flipgrid (now Flip) to create engaging video discussions, build classroom community, and give students a voice through short video responses.

What is Flipgrid?

Flipgrid (recently rebranded as Flip by Microsoft) is a video discussion platform that allows teachers to create topics and students to respond with short videos. It's like a video-based discussion board where students can share their thoughts, demonstrate understanding, and engage with peers through video responses and replies.

Note: Flipgrid is now Flip

In 2023, Microsoft rebranded Flipgrid as "Flip" and integrated it more deeply with Microsoft Teams and other education tools. The core functionality remains the same, but you may see both names used interchangeably.

Why Flipgrid Works for Students:

  • Student voice & choice — Students express themselves authentically through video
  • Builds confidence — Shy students can record, re-record, and edit before sharing
  • Asynchronous discussions — Students participate on their own schedule
  • Creative tools — Filters, stickers, text overlays, and drawing tools make videos fun
  • Safe environment — Teachers moderate all content before it's visible to the class
